I almost died falling into quicksand — and it changed my life for the better
This couple sank into each other’s hearts.
A man who fell into quicksand while strolling along a beautiful beach with his best friend had his life changed by the terrifying incident.
Pals Mitchell O’Brien and Breanne Sika were enjoying a relaxing day out on a recent spring weekend, walking along the Lake Michigan shoreline — when all of a sudden O’Brien found himself being sucked several feet into the sand.
All it took was one wrong step into a patch of soft sand — and within seconds, he was waist-deep in the sand with water swirling around him.
He kicked his leg out sideways to stop himself from falling further — only to realize that there would be no quick way out of the shocking quagmire.
Sika wanted to call for help immediately, but O’Brien insisted he could dig himself out.
After 15 minutes, he conceded that he couldn’t escape — soon noticing that “the sand was coming back almost faster than I could get it out of the way,” the Midwesterner recounted to NBC News.
“For me, those moments were terrifying,” Sika added, remembering the sinking feeling of watching her best friend struggle to get out.
They finally agreed that the authorities needed to be called and both called the dispatch.
In her panic, Sika referred to her long-time friend as her boyfriend during the call — while O’Brien called her his girlfriend.
This was reportedly the first time the twosome had ever mentioned having romantic feelings for one another.
“Two years of this guy being my best friend and just trying to hide everything about how we felt and he tried to die on me and becomes my boyfriend,” Sika explained.
Firefighters eventually arrived on the scene and pulled O’Brien out of the dangerous “mix of sand and muck.”
Turns out, the quicksand was the quickest way to turn a friendship into a relationship.
