Residents of ritzy NYC condo the Apthorp — where ‘Only Murders in the Building’ filmed — cope with months-long gas outage
They’re steaming mad about these hot plates.
Residents of the ritzy historic Upper West Side condo, the Apthorp, have been without gas for months — and they’re furious at building management for giving them paltry electric cookers to cope, The Post has learned.
“I have this beautiful apartment. All I want to do is make scrambled eggs in the morning!” fumed one resident, who paid nearly $4 million for his opulent abode. “It’s ridiculous!”
The legendary arched limestone building— which Al Pacino, Sydney Poitier and Cyndi Lauper have called home — lost its gas lines four months ago after a store tenant broke a pipe, according to the resident, who asked not to be named.
The outage made it impossible for some residents to cook with standard gas ovens inside the iconic pre-war building at 390 West End Avenue, where units go for roughly $4 to $23 million.
“It has just been a nightmare,” said the resident. “People are paying crazy prices for these apartments and they can’t even cook.”
To ease their anger, the management company, Gumley Haft, sent an email to residents offering them Elite Gourmet-brand hot plates, which appear to retail for $27.99 on Amazon.com.
“As a reminder, the building has a supply of two-burner hot plates available for residents who may need them. These hot plates can be picked up at the front gate,” Peter Mettham, of the management company, wrote in an email to residents on March 13.
“We understand that this is an inconvenience and we greatly appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time.”
But the low-end appliance offer left some folks feeling burnt.
“Hot plates were available but you had to go down to the doorman to ask. It was like, really?” said the resident, who begrudgingly accepted the plug-in burners.
The “service interruption” has also made it hard for some residents to sell their units, he said.
“Condo owners are pissed,” he said. “Some people are trying to sell their apartments but they can’t. [Nobody’s] buying a $5 million apartment with no gas.”
The sprawling 12-story building, which includes some rent-stabilized apartments, boasts more than 150 units.
In 2021, interior scenes of the Hulu hit “Only Murders in the Building” were shot there not far from the building’s grand courtyard.
In the March 13 email, management told tenants it is working with an engineering firm on “gas restoration” and needs to “survey the building.”
Still, some residents feel left in the dark about when it will be fixed.
“They really haven’t told us this is the reason or what will happen, whether it will be six months or a year,” the anonymous resident said. “They say it can stay this way for up to a year.”
One tenant contacted by The Post Thursday said she was aware of the gas disruption but it didn’t impact her unit. A second tenant said his gas was working “great.”
Mettham didn’t return The Post’s request for comment Thursday.
